Frequently Asked Questions About Thickening Equipment
What is pulp thickening and why is it needed?+
Pulp thickening increases stock consistency by removing water. It is needed before stages like dispersion, bleaching, and storage where higher consistency is required. Thickening also reduces pumping and storage volumes.
What is the difference between a disc filter and a gravity thickener?+
A Disc Filter uses gravity-assisted vacuum filtration for high-capacity thickening. A Gravity Thickener (GDT) uses gravity drainage without vacuum — simpler and lower cost. Both achieve similar outlet consistency.
How does a gravity thickener work?+
Stock enters the vat at low consistency. The drum rotates eccentrically, creating an enhanced drainage zone. Water drains through disc sectors by gravity while fibers collect on the surface. Thickened pulp exits via automatic discharge door with adjustable steel weirs. No vacuum required.
What is a decker thickener used for?+
A Decker Thickener uses eccentric drum rotation with gravity filtration. It features stainless steel construction, adjustable weirs, and compact footprint. Used in kraft pulp thickening, recycled fiber processing, and pulp processing stages.
What are the five thickening machines Parason offers?+
Disc Filter for vacuum thickening, Double Disc Filter for higher capacity, Gravity Thickener for gravity-based dewatering, Folded Thickener for space-constrained installations, and Decker Thickener for compact thickening.
What is the difference between a disc filter and a disc thickener?+
A Disc Filter uses gravity-assisted vacuum filtration with sector-based disc technology for high throughput and super-clear filtrate. A disc thickener is simpler gravity-based. The Parason Disc Filter and Double Disc Filter are designed for high-capacity continuous thickening.
What is a folded thickener used for?+
The Folded Thickener uses a folded wire filtration design that maximizes filtration surface area in minimal floor space. Suitable for smaller mills, retrofit installations, and constrained process positions.
