Variable Rib Design plates with SAS technology, specially engineered for mixed furnish applications requiring uniform refining across heterogeneous fiber blends.
Parason VRD refiner plates feature a dual-zone bar pattern engineered specifically for mixed furnish refining. The Variable Rib Design combines coarse inlet bars with fine outlet bars on a single plate, allowing simultaneous treatment of long and short fibres without separate refining stages.
Manufactured using special casting and precision CNC technology, VRD plates deliver uniform hardness throughout, consistent wear characteristics, and optimized hydraulic capacity for higher throughput with lower energy consumption.
In conventional refining, long and short fibres require separate refining stages with different bar patterns to achieve the right Specific Edge Load (SEL) and Cutting Edge Length (CEL). The VRD design solves this by integrating both zones into a single plate for mixed furnish refining.
SAS + Base Taper: The Small Angle Sector (SAS) design provides close control over cutting angle, while the base taper optimizes hydraulic capacity for better throughput across both fibre zones.

Initial stock entry zone for flow distribution
SAS geometry for controlled cutting angle
Coarse bars for initial fiber treatment
Fine bars for final fibrillation
Complete fiber flow path through all zones
Optimized for short fiber refining
Higher rib height for long fiber retention
Paper grades where VRD plates excel
Mixed softwood/hardwood furnish for corrugated liner board with high burst and ring crush strength
OCC-based furnish requiring controlled refining for CMT and concora values
Recycled furnish with variable fibre composition requiring dual-zone treatment
Multi-layer board with mixed furnish top and back layers
Hardwood-dominant mixed furnish for smooth surface and opacity
Key Advantage: VRD plates eliminate the need for separate refining stages for long and short fibres, reducing equipment footprint and energy costs while improving paper strength properties.
